An original nighttime painting depicting a cabin, lit from within by a lantern, and signed lower right by Alaskan artist Sydney Laurence (1865-1940.) By the late 1920s, Sydney Mortimer Laurence was clearly Alaska's most prominent painter, and owning one of his original oil paintings is one of the holy grails of Alaskan art collectors; this being only the fourth example we have offered to date. Laurence's vision of the "lonely landscape," as art historian Kesler E. Woodward termed it, has not only "influenced virtually all later depictions of Alaska, but has conditioned the way many Alaskans see their own land." The piece exhibits smoke damage from a previous owner's house fire and warrants professional conservation efforts. Housed in a lovely frame made in Belgium, this artistic gem measures approximately 10.25" x 12.25" overall, with a sight view of 6.25" x 8".
