Historic financial ephemera from the Alaskan Gold Rush featuring a pair of printing blocks and multiple stacks of vintage bank checks issued by the Miners and Merchants Bank in the ghost town of Iditarod, Alaska. The Miners and Merchants Bank was established during the height of the Alaska Gold Rush. In July 1910, the bank originally began operations out of a tent to serve the thousands of miners pouring into the area after gold was discovered along Otter Creek. The town rapidly transformed into a bustling commerce hub, and a permanent bank building equipped with a heavy concrete vault was constructed. By the 1920s, the gold supply dwindled, and the town was slowly abandoned. While Iditarod eventually became a ghost town, the bank's massive two-foot-thick concrete vault still stands alone in the remote Alaskan wilderness today as an enduring monument to the Gold Rush era. The collection features two wooden printing blocks with reverse-etched metal faceplates used to print custom bank checks, alongside six distinct stacks of original paper checks dated from the 1910s. These paper checks showcase handwritten payouts to local miners and regional merchants, processed through The Scandinavian American Bank in Seattle, Washington, which acted as the primary clearinghouse for wealth extracted from the territory. Historically, these items are highly significant to Alaska as they document the sudden rise of commerce in remote mining districts like Iditarod, which grew from a tent city in 1910 to a major gold-producing hub. Today, while Iditarod is a ghost town, these artifacts—along with the bank’s surviving concrete vault in the wilderness—stand as some of the few remaining physical testimonies to the economic engines that funded the development of early Alaska.
