This 1914 example is a $5 gold denomination struck in the traditional 90% gold alloy. Its recessed design gives it a distinctly different appearance from the raised Liberty portrait of the preceding half eagle.

Fourteen World War II Japanese Invasion Money (JIM) fractional centavo banknotes issued during the 1942–1945 military occupation of the Philippines. The collection consists of nine 10-Centavos notes featuring the PR block code, four 5-Centavos notes showing PG, PL, and PU block codes, and one 50-Centavos note highlighting a detailed agricultural plantation scene with the PI block identifier. The letters printed in red on the face of the notes are Block Letters. The first letter "P" stands for the Philippines and the second letter indicates the specific chronological printing run or production batch. Historically significant, these unbacked fiat currency notes were printed by the Japanese government to replace local currency, ultimately causing extreme hyperinflation that led locals to derisively nickname them "Mickey Mouse money" because it required suitcases or large native bags (bayóng) full of bills just to purchase everyday items like a box of matches or an egg. Because these fractional centavo notes only featured block letters instead of unique individual serial numbers, they were incredibly easy to copy. General Douglas MacArthur famously ordered the Allied Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to mass-produce counterfeit versions of these exact notes. They smuggled millions of fake bills into the islands via submarine to fund local guerrilla forces and deliberately worsen the inflation crippling the Japanese occupation economy.

Today, they are highly collectible examples of provisional emergency fiat currency, carrying significant numismatic value when found in premium, crisp uncirculated condition-especially as an intact 15-note consecutive serial number run. No longer legal tender, they were officially demonetized by the Central Bank of the Philippines in 1985.
